Happy National Green Juice Day!

Sure you can hop into the car and go to the store to grab yourself a jug of the best tasting green colored juice you can find. Another option for you is to stay at home on this lovely Saturday, in your pajamas and make some delicious green smoothie! Guess what? They're also good for you. They can wash out the toxins that are no doubt in your body. We've all got bacteria and stuff working its way in our bodies to make us sick eventually, but here's a wonderful way to help stop those nasty bad boys.
I found a amazing "Ultimate Green Smoothie Formula" on Pinterest. (Because who isn't on Pinterest to pass the time on a lazy Saturday?)
Here are the steps:
Step 1: Pick one (unsweetened) liquid (1.5 cups)
Almond Milk
Soy Milk
Hemp Milk
Coconut Milk
Rice Milk
Coconut Water (or plain water)
Almond milk is my favorite to use. Every since I became lactose intolerant, Almond Milk has been my go-to substitute for regular 2% milk.
Step 2: Choose your greens (1 big handful)
Kale
Spinach
Beet Greens
Collards
Swiss Chard
While kale is a good green and incredibly good for your body, spinach has been my favorite to use and eat. I've always been able to handle the taste of it better than kale. Kale is good, just ask my mom. She cooks it every morning with her eggs.
Step 3: Choose your fruit (1-2 cups, fresh or frozen)
Banana
Apple
Melon
Strawberries
Blackberries
Blueberries
Raspberries
Mango
Pear
Peach
Orange
Pineapple
Kiwi
Honestly you can combine however many fruits you want. You can make a "Very Berry Not-So-Green Smoothie." Just make sure to cut down the portions, for example: use 1/2 cup strawberries, 1/2 cup blackberries, 1/2 cup blueberries, and 1/2 cup raspberries.
Or you could make it a "Green Vitamin C-Fighting Machine," with 1/2 cup diced mango, 1/2 cup diced orange, and 1/2 cup pineapple bits.
And of course, these are only suggestions. Go ahead and improvise, experiment! Use your imaginations!
Step 4: Supercharge it (add as many as you like!)
1-2 TBSP Plant-Based Protein Powder
1 TBSP Chia Seeds
1 TBSP Ground Flaxseed
1 TBSP Sesame Seeds
2 TBSP Avocado
1 TBSP Hemp Seeds
1 tsp - 1 TBSP Coconut Oil, Hemp oil, or Flax Oil
1 TBSP Nut Butter (Peanut Butter, Almond Butter, etc...)
1 TBSP Raw Cacao
1 TBSP Bee Pollen
1-2 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp Ginger
1-2 tsp Vanilla Extract (or any other extract)
1-2 tsp Green Powders (Spirulina, Chlorella)
1 tsp Maca Powder
Now I wouldn't personally use seeds because I don't like them getting stuck in my teeth and I've always felt like seeds takes the satisfaction of a "smoothie" for me. I like it "smooth." If you don't mind them, go ahead and use them! Chia seeds are quite delectable! My favorites to use are: avocado, peanut butter/almond butter, raw cacao, cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla extract/almond extract.
Step 5: add a sweetener (optional)
1 tsp Stevia
1 tsp Raw Agave
1 tsp Chopped Dates
1 tsp Honey
If you're anything like me, you like things sweet. Just make sure to not overdo it because I know I have done just that very many times. Keep adding 1 tsp of the sweetener and taste-test it after every one until you're satisfied.
Step 6: Blend it up!
Blend until smooth, server over ice, and be prepared to make smug faces and inappropriate yummy noises.
PS: It also happens to be National Spouses Day so if you're one of the lucky ones who's married then make sure to give your significant other a big bear hug and a smooth on the lips. And if you feel up to the task, maybe share a bit of your green juice fun!
